Derrick Sanderlin is a musician, writer, and organizer from the Inland Empire. Surrounded by a diversity of sound, he grew up singing in convalescent homes and churches and performing with local punk rock and metal bands. His first EP, Ghetto, blends jazz, punk, folk, and R&B to communicate the complexity of his family, love life, and identity as a young black man in dominant culture. As current Artist-in-Residence at Forager, Derrick’s new series ˈäsəˌlāt (oscillate) attempts to open up sounds and conversations around toxic masculinity, mental health, the power of story, and the art of resilience. He lives and loves in San José, CA and has been seen with bands Sine Wave and Rhythm & Folk and with singer/songwriter Noñameko. His music is available on all major platforms, and he will be releasing new songs as a part of äsəˌlāt every month through October 2019.
